VOLUNTEER REPORT -Eduard Muntaner Perich I had wanted to volunteer abroad for a long time, but had not decided where or when. I contacted many NGOs, schools and foundations from different parts of the world and finally discovered Shanti Bhavan through The George Foundation’s website and I liked their work and philosophy very much. Seeing that in 2004 a Spanish volunteer, Montserrat, had been working there, I contacted her and, with her wonderful memories and stories about Shanti Bhavan, its staff and its children, she finally convinced me. As a volunteer in Shanti Bhavan (from November 23, 2005 to February 5, 2006, with a brief break to celebrate Christmas with my family in Spain) I taught Computer Science (theory and practice) and also gave some students individual help in mathematics, I taught basketball, and helped in the school library and the museum. Shanti Bhavan is a very beautiful school, with many gardens and fine buildings. The environment and the surroundings are spectacular. The school is in a remote village called Balliganapalli, quite near to Hosur and Bangalore, so you can spend the weekends there for shopping and Internet. My room was comfortable and clean, and the food was very tasty, a little spicy for the Spanish taste, but I soon got used to it. I think that an easy improvement for the school would be an Internet connection; it would be helpful for the staff, the volunteers, and of course, for the children’s education. I am very interested in international cooperation and development, and during my stay in India I visited other NGOs and some schools for poor children in the Anantapur district (Andhra Pradesh). Shanti Bhavan is the best school I have seen so far. The level of education the children receive is incredibly high. Children in Shanti Bhavan are very lucky; I hope they will make the most of the incredible opportunity that Dr.George has given them. With reference to the children of Shanti Bhavan (the most important part of the school), they are lovely, smart, very friendly, and more disciplined and respectful than most European children. I really enjoyed teaching them as well as playing basketball with them or simply talking. I think they enjoy studying and living at Shanti Bhavan, and their spectacular bright eyes and permanent smiles are proof of their happiness and health. In Shanti Bhavan there are daily assemblies where students talk about national and international events. In fact students are educated as global citizens and taught to “think globally”, but of course without forgetting their rich and beautiful Indian culture. I think most European and American schools could learn a lot from this kind of education. All the staff at Shanti Bhavan is very professional, they are very kind to the volunteers, and lovely to the children. I think all the teachers, aunties, facilities managers, etc. enjoy working at Shanti Bhavan and are happy contributing to Dr George’s dream. I am very lucky because during my stay I had the opportunity of taking part in different celebrations and events: an enjoyable campfire, a picnic in Krishnagiri, the Christmas celebration, the Pongal celebration, Republic Day, and also sports day. I am also very fortunate because I coincided with another Spanish volunteer, Sara. She is an incredible person, children love her very much, I think we will continue being good friends from now on. I also coincided with two more volunteers: Derek and Halee, both from the USA. Derek was my roommate, a good friend with whom I had the opportunity to improve my poor spoken English. I also had the honor to meet Dr George, the founder of Shanti Bhavan, a very intelligent man with a dream that has come true. His talks to the children and the staff were amazing, inspiring, and a good opportunity to understand the philosophy of his Foundation and to learn about future projects which he has in mind. During my stay, many visitors came to Shanti Bhavan. The children have the incredible chance to meet and get to know people from different countries, schools and universities, with different skills, jobs, religions, thoughts and ideas. In my opinion this is very beneficial for the children’s education and upbringing. After mentioning all these things, I think is obvious that I recommend the experience of volunteering at Shanti Bhavan to anyone who wishes to help poor children and has a desire to live a fine experience in a beautiful place and country. I can affirm that my stay in Shanti Bhavan was fantastic and unforgettable. I will try to repeat it in the future, at least as a visitor. I would like to thank the entire staff, and specially Dr. George, Mrs. Law, Ms Beena, Mrs Shanti, Tommy, and of course the children of Shanti Bhavan. VOLUNTEER REPORT (Spanish) – Eduard Muntaner Perich Hacía mucho tiempo que quería irme de voluntario al extranjero, pero no tenía decidido ni dónde ni cuándo. Contacté con muchas ONGs, escuelas y fundaciones de diferentes partes del mundo, hasta que finalmente descubrí Shanti Bhavan a través de la página web de la George Foundation. Me gustó su filosofía y me percaté que en el 2004 habían tenido una voluntaria española, Montserrat. Contacté con ella, y con sus bonitos recuerdos e historias de Shanti Bhavan, de su staff, y de sus niños, me acabo por convencer. Como voluntario en Shanti Bhavan (del 23 de Noviembre del 2005 al 5 de Febrero del 2006, con una pequeña pausa para celebrar las Navidades con mi familia) enseñé informática básica (teoría y prácticas), di clases de repaso de matemáticas, enseñé a jugar a baloncesto a los mayores, y ayudé en la biblioteca y el museo. Shanti Bhavan es una escuela preciosa, con muchos jardines y bonitos edificios. El paisaje y los alrededores son espectaculares. La escuela está ubicada en las afueras de una aldea remota llamada Balliganapalli, bastante cerca de Hosur y Bangalore, de manera que uno puede gastar los fines de semana allí haciendo compras y conectándose a Internet. Mi habitación era confortable y limpia, y la comida muy gustosa, un poco picante para un chico español, pero me acostumbré rápidamente. Creo que una mejora muy sencilla para la escuela sería una conexión a Internet; sería útil para el staff, los voluntarios, y por supuesto para la educación de los niños. Estoy muy interesado en cooperación internacional y desarrollo, y durante mi estancia en la India visité otras ONGs y algunas escuelas rurales para niños pobres, en el distrito de Anantapur (Andhra Pradesh). Shanti Bhavan es la mejor con mucha diferencia. El nivel de educación que los niños reciben es altísimo teniendo en cuenta los recursos de que disponen. Los niños de Shanti Bhavan realmente son muy afortunados; espero que aprovechen al máximo la oportunidad que el Dr George les ha dado. Respecto a los niños (sin duda la parte más importante de la escuela), son maravillosos, listos y muy simpáticos. Son mucho más disciplinados y respetuosos que la mayoría de niños europeos. Me lo pasé muy bien dándoles clases, enseñándoles baloncesto, o simplemente hablando con ellos. Creo que ellos disfrutan estudiando y viviendo en Shanti Bhavan, y sus increíbles y brillantes ojos, así como sus permanentes sonrisas, son prueba inequívoca de su felicidad y salud. En la escuela hay asambleas diarias, donde los niños hablan y discuten sobre noticias nacionales e internacionales. De hecho, creo que los niños son educados como ciudadanos del mundo y se les enseña a "pensar globalmente", pero por supuesto sin olvidar la rica y bonita cultura india. Creo que las escuelas de Europa y América tendrían que aprender bastante de esta manera de educar. Todo el staff es muy profesional, extremadamente amables con los voluntarios, y atentos con los niños. Creo que los profesores, las aunties y todo el personal, disfrutan trabajando en Shanti Bhavan, y están contentos de poder contribuir de alguna manera al sueño del Dr George. Tengo mucha suerte porque durante mi estancia tuve la oportunidad de involucrarme en diferentes celebraciones y eventos: un divertido campfire, un picnic en Krishnagiri, la celebración de la Navidad, el Pongal, el Día de la República, y el sports day. Tambié soy muy afortunado porque coincidí con otra voluntaria española, Sara. Ella es una chica increíble, y los niños la adoran y la quieren un montón. Creo que continuaremos siendo buenos amigos a partir de ahora. También coincidí con dos voluntarios americanos: Derek y Halee. Derek era mi compañero de habitación, un buen amigo y una oportunidad de mejorar mi precario inglés. También tuve la oportunidad y el honor de conocer al Dr George, el fundador de Shanti Bhavan, un hombre muy inteligente con un sueño que se ha convertido en realidad. Sus charlas a los niños y al staff eran muy interesantes, inspiradoras, y una buena oportunidad de entender la filosofía de la fundación y conocer los futuros proyectos que tiene en mente. Durante mi estancia vinieron muchas visitas a Shanti Bhavan. Los niños tienen la increíble oportunidad de conocer a gente de diferentes países, escuelas y universidades, con diferentes trabajos, religiones, pensamientos e ideas. En mi opinión eso es muy beneficioso para la su educación y crecimiento. Creo que después de escribir todo esto, es evidente que recomiendo la experiencia de hacer de voluntario en Shanti Bhavan, a todo aquel que tenga deseos de ayudar en la educación de niños desprivilegiados, y que desee vivir una bonita experiencia en un país fantástico. Puedo afirmar que mi estancia fue fenomenal y inolvidable. Intentaré repetirla en el futuro, aunque sólo sea como visitante. Me gustaría dar las gracias a todo el staff, y especialmente al Dr George, Mrs. Law, Ms Beena, Mrs Shanti y Tommy, y por supuesto a todos los niños y niñas de Shanti Bhavan.
